FALL SEMESTER OF ACTING CLASSES BEGINS AT MEDIA THEATRE WEEKEND OF SEPT. 12

Acting classes start up again the weekend of September 12 at The Media Theatre. The Fall semester presents a variety of classes for children, teens, and adults.

The classes offer professional training for those just beginning or wishing to further their education. Instruction is based on The Meisner Technique which follows the basic structure that ‘Acting is living as truthfully as one can under an imaginary circumstance.’

Within this curriculum there is no ‘character’ or pretense and actors are placed in an environment which allows them to be who they are, building self-awareness and self-esteem within their own unique personality. The idea of ‘copying’ someone else’s performance is pushed aside as actors create from within themselves to fulfill the required role they may be asked to portray.

The Media Theatre will continue to offer three levels separate levels for children. The popular Children’s Class, for ages 6 and up, will meet on Saturday mornings at 9am beginning September 12 and continuing for ten weeks. This one-hour weekly course is primarily for ages 6 to 9 who are just starting out or who have less stage experience than others in their age group. It features exercises for building basic speaking skills on stage (volume, diction), learning stage directions, and developing self-esteem. Fun improvisational style exercises are also utilized to build the concept that acting requires team work on occasion.
Students of The Media Theatre enjoy class.
Pictured are Jaydin Knight, Jolie Jaffe,
Holden Dubach, Carter Weiss, Katheryn Cooper, and Sean O' Neill.

Level Two for Children will meet Tuesdays at 4:30 beginning September 15. This 10-week one-hour course is appropriate for children ages 8 to 11, or for those who have some onstage experience. The focus is primarily on  group or scene work to strengthen acting skills. Theatre exercises are also implemented to enhance stage focus and discipline.

Younger children, aged 4, 5, and 6 get into the act with the Introduction to Theatre Class on Tuesdays at 3:30 beginning September 15. The one hour weekly course is specifically designed for the youngest age group that has an interest in performing. The young children will learn by ‘Acting Out’ by 'talking to' a stuffed animal in which the topic of real conversation is approached. They may also be asked to act as if they are ‘walking in the rain or snow’ or to ‘show us how you deal with a pet dog or cat’. The class will instill within the students that being who they are is important and following instructions will be a major focus. Imagination is a major ingredient of the Introduction to Theatre Class.

The Teen Acting Class will continue on Sundays at 6pm starting September 13. This eight-week 90-minute class is ideal for ages 12 and up. Each student is given one-on-one instruction within a group environment.  Focus is on stage skills, following direction, scripted scene work with partners, and monologues. Improvisational Scene Work is also explored, and becomes a major part of the focus as the weeks progress, enhancing the ability to 'react quickly as you would without over-analyzing'.

The Adult Class will meet Sundays at 7:30. This eight-week 90-minute class is designed for the adult (18 and up) who wishes to explore acting for the first time or who wants to strengthen their stage skills. Scene study with partners and monologues are the focus. The class also enhances those whose careers involve any type of public speaking.

For those who have been students in the classes, The Media Theatre reminds participants that each semester, while based on similar structure, is completely different as classes are built to reflect the personalities of each student within the group setting. Therefore, for example, if a child repeats the Saturday morning class or any of the classes offered, it is never exactly the same. Students are also dealt with and instructed within their own personal level.

Jesse Cline, the Artistic Director for The Media Theatre, will continue to instruct and oversee the next semester of The New School, The Media Theatre's conservatory-style music theatre.

There are changes to The New School for the 2015-16 Season, including focusing purely on Acting and Vocal Music for the younger age group (meeting Mondays starting Sept. 28 from 4:30-6:30). The teens of The New School will meet Thursdays during the same two hour time slot focusing on one-act plays or musicals which they will perform at the theatre and locally as a traveling youth ensemble. To join the New School, which is completely separate from the aforementioned weekly acting classes, please email or call for an interview and/ or audition.

The Children's, Teen, and Adult Acting Classes require no audition or interview. Roger Ricker, a stage veteran of over 85 productions and concerts at The Media Theatre, instructs the Children and Teen Classes. Tim Haney, who has been with the theatre since 1997, instructs the Adult Class.

The Media Theatre also has several dance classes to choose from, which are ongoing. Purchase a Dance Card for $120 (good for 10 classes) and choose from Tap 1, Tap 2, Ballet for Youth, Adult Ballet Class, Contemporary Indian Dance, and Creative Movement for pre-school. Please call for information.

MEDIA THEATRE'S NEW SCHOOL THEATRE STUDY PROGRAM OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEENS

The Media Theatre's New School is entering its fifth year during the 2015-16 Season.

A prestigious 'by invitation or audition only' theatre study program for two age groups, The New School focuses on the truth of performance: Who is the actor and how does the actor approach the scene, monologue, or song?

Based within the Sanford Meisner technique, which is defined with the statement "Acting is living as truthfully as one can under an imaginary circumstance", The New School focuses on two aspects of music theatre (Acting and Vocal Music) for the younger age group on Mondays during the 4:30-6:30pm class beginning September 28.
Media Theatre's Artistic Director Jesse Cline, who instructs and leads The New School, a conservatory-style approach to theatre education which is completely separate from the theatre's Acting Classes.

The Teens (ages 12 and up) will not have a class structured in the same way. They will, instead, form a Youth Ensemble Performance Troupe which will meet every Thursday from 4:30-6:30pm starting October 1.

The New School Teens will differ from any other class at The Media Theatre in the following ways:

1) They will focus on one act plays and musicals, to be performed at the theatre and also as a traveling acting company in the region at special events, schools, or corporate gatherings.

2) Jesse Cline, Artistic Director for The Media Theatre, will instruct and direct the New School Teens. This is the only class Cline teaches at The Media Theatre, aside from private lessons. It is exclusive.

3) Chris Ertelt, resident music director for the theatre, will offer his knowledge regarding the songs and/ or scores they will work on. He will also accompany each participant during rehearsal and performance.

4) The New School Teens will meet on stage at The Media Theatre. This gives the participants a true theatrical atmosphere upon which to build a solid base of education and rehearsal.

5) Special guest directors and actors will meet with The New School Teens on occasion in exclusive Master Classes. Guests may include but are not limited to Barrymore Award winning actress Jennie Eisenhower, "Billy Elliot" director Geoffrey Goldberg, and professional actors from our Broadway Series. Only New School Teens will be offered these Master Classes as part of their training.

6) The New School Teens will be invited to tech and/ or dress rehearsals for the Broadway Series. They will gain firsthand knowledge and insight to a director's vision as it is being created and will have opportunities to chat with the director, designers, and actors. No other class at The Media Theatre will be given this opportunity.

7) The New School Teens, on a date appropriate for The Media Theatre staff, Artistic Director Jesse Cline, and parents of the group, will travel to NYC by train on a weekend morning to see a Broadway show. (This will be an extra cost for show ticket, lunch, etc) They will discuss the show with Cline and possibly other special guests who travel with the Teens.

We look forward to a very special 2015-16 New School season.

There is still space available! Email Roger at rer764@gmail.com to set up an audition or interview with Jesse Cline. (Previous New School students may not have to audition or interview)

MEDIA THEATRE WELCOMES MARSHA PELTZ AS NEW DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

$

0
Marsha Peltz, The Media Theatre’s Director of Development who also assists with publicity for the professional music theatre company, may be a new staff member at the theatre but she is certainly not new to the region. She returns to her entertainment ‘roots’ after a few years away when she promoted the former Valley Forge Music Fair and several Atlantic City casino hotels.

Philadelphia-based Peltz is an award-winning publicist who's promoted everything from Amoco Oil to Zany Brainy. The Philadelphia Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awarded Marsha its 2003 Pepperpot for Best Independent Practitioner -- one of several PR trophies she's proudly taken home over the years.
Marsha Peltz

Marsha started her career as a newspaper reporter. In the 1980s she was Atlantic City's youngest casino PR director, promoting everything from Mickey Mantle to middle-of-the-night jackpot winners. She started producing TV specials at 6ABC, while handling over 100 headliners annually as Valley Forge Music Fair's press agent. In the 1990s, she added a personal life and moved to the Philadelphia suburbs where she juggled babies and Fortune 500 clients for the big ad agencies.

For the next eighteen years she created the almost-perfect balance of family life, volunteering and lively clients at the virtual agency KidStuff Public Relations -- thanks to technology. She uses what she refers to as her "momsense" to nurture clients, pitch reporters and have fun with whatever the topic of the day might be.

The topic of the day for Marsha Peltz will now be Development at The Media Theatre, the Philadelphia region’s award-winning professional music theatre company which produces its shows from the ‘ground up’, meaning they are not tours that travel from place to place but are built, directed, and designed specifically for The Media Theatre stage.

Marsha believes The Media Theatre is a vital ingredient to not only Delaware County but to the surrounding region. “The theatre has so many great things,” she said. “Top notch Broadway musicals on State Street in a beautiful suburb without the pricing or pressure of heading to the city, for one. Media has so many wonderful restaurants for a pre-show lunch or dinner. It’s within an hour’s drive from just about everywhere in the Greater Philadelphia region including Chester County, Cherry Hill, even Wilmington—which is a mere 15 minutes from the theatre. The Mainline is only a half hour away, and parking here is a bargain.”

“Then there are the awards The Media Theatre has received,” she continued. “These include Broadway World’s Best Theatre Company in Philadelphia the past three years. That’s an incredible feat and you know at times it seems we are the region’s best kept secret. But once you see our shows, all supervised or directed by Artistic Director Jesse Cline, you are hooked! You’ve got options to choose from in the area, but why not come and see why we have won?”

She knows from whence she speaks, as she has been a Media Theatre patron. “Long before I became involved here I was a patron with my husband and two boys. We enjoyed the children's shows as a great way to introduce our sons to the joy of live theatre. As they grew older we attended shows as a special event.”

As the Director of Development, Marsha Peltz’ focus is now on how individuals and organizations are able to assist the non-profit theatre company. “People may be surprised to learn that the price of their ticket does not cover all of the expenses of the production. Things like costumes, stage sets, theatre payroll and even the electric bill need to be paid. As a non-profit, it is our passion to bring joy through the arts. But we must ask for donations to stay fresh and offer the best "product." Individuals and may make donations through our website or attend many of our fundraisers. Corporations can team with the theatre to create a program that can be beneficial to both of us. I would love to hear from potential donors at marsha@mediatheatre.org.”

The classic musical "Gypsy" is at The Media Theatre now through November 1. Philly's own Broadway actress Krissy Fraelich, a Springfield resident in Delaware County, portrays the iconic role of Mama Rose who will stop at nothing to insure that her daughter becomes a 'star'.

Faced with the final days of Vaudeville, the musical-based on a true story-takes us on the journey from the time her daughters are very young to their adult lives in which Rose pushes her oldest daughter onto the stage in a burlesque house.

The Jule Styne/ Stephen Sondheim score is one of music theatre's most brilliant, including the legendary songs "Let Me Entertain You", "Everything's Coming Up Roses", and "Rose's Turn".  The book is by Arthur Laurents.

MEDIA THEATRE ANNOUNCES 'BILLY ELLIOT' CAST

$

The Media Theatre has the Philadelphia region's professional premiere of the 10-time Tony winning Broadway show "Billy Elliot: The Musical". Based on the film about the boy who, during a miner's strike in the 1980's, wants to become a ballet dancer rather than the boxer his father has set his sights on, the musical features a score by Elton John.

"Billy Elliot: The Musical" became an instant hit on both London's West End and Broadway due to its incredible choreography which is mostly performed by the young actor portraying Billy. A show based on the template of old-fashioned 'book' musicals while leaping into a new genre of entertainment it encapsulates the unique qualities which each of us have within us, thereby focusing on individuality and self-expression. As The New York Times said, 'Billy Elliot is not a dance musical. It's about why we need dance.'

With a sub-plot regarding a miner's strike in a small town and the life values which go along with it, sometimes which deeply contrast with the goals of life one has when art is a main ingredient to one's make-up, "Billy Elliot: The Musical" reaches beyond dance as it reminds us all that sometimes life is not just about what is in front of us but what it is we are able to achieve.

The production at The Media Theatre will be directed by Geoffrey Goldberg. It plays November 18, 2015 to January 3, 2016 during the holiday season.

The role of Billy Elliot will be shared by Media's Brandon Rannalli and West Chester's Gunar Daniels. Both boys were chosen after an extensive East Coast search in which the production company had two days of auditions in New York City.

Mrs. Wilkinson, the ballet teacher, will be played by Anne Connors. Billy's Dad is Zach Wobensmith, with the role of his brother Tony being brought to the stage by Garrison Carpenter.

Billy's friend Michael is Nathan Esser, and the saucy sassy role of Grandma is played by Delaware County's Susan Wefel. Mr. Braithwaite is Steven Ciapanna, with Kelly Briggs as George.

Elisa Matthews has the plum role of Billy's Dead Mum, while the role of his friend Debbie is double cast with two Media Theatre students: Allie Buchanan and Anna Grace Rosenthal. Big Davey is Rusty Flounders.

Rachel Beiswenger, Kaitlin Davis, JP Dunphy, Jake Glassman, Topher Layton, Patrick Ludt, Kimberly Maxson, Mark Schenfish, Carl Nathaniel Smith, and Kristi Smith make up the Ensemble.

The Ballet Girls are Larissa Culbertson, Jolie Jaffe, Anai Lee, Mirabelle Lee, Brooke McCarthy, Rosa Nardo, Veronica Nardo, Kennedy Ndiaye, and Kristianna Ranalli. Aiden Fox is the small boy.

There's a Beauty on stage at The Media Theatre each weekend through November 1. It's the "Tale of Beauty and The Beast" Saturdays at 11am and Sundays at Noon, featuring a cast of professional adult actors as well as student actors.

This original version of the story features songs such as "Could You Possibly Be My Friend?" and "Fables and Fairytales" as well as humorous characters like Greedo and Graspo the two brothers-in-law of The Beauty who will do everything they can to achieve riches.

Swarthmore's Jacob Mergott, 16, plays the dual role of The Prince/ The Beast, with Molly Sorensen, 14, of Malvern as The Beauty. Both did very well in The Media Theatre's summer "Vocalist" contests with Mergott making it to the final round in 2015 and  Sorensen winning the competition in 2014.

An Old Woman (Roger Ricker) casts a spell on The Prince and, later, on the entire audience as volunteers are invited onto the stage to help out.

Realizing he is different, they take him to Christmastown where he meets Elizabeth, a girl who befriends him, as well as the theatre director Mr. Holly who thinks Jack is in town to perform in the holiday show! The iconic musical "Gypsy" is on stage at The Media Theatre through November 1. Philadelphia's Krissy Fraelich, a Springfield resident, plays Mama Rose who is the ultimate stage mother, doing everything she can to push her daughters to stardom. From the time of vaudeville's heyday to it's end, Mama Rose wants nothing more than celebrity and fame to find its way to siblings June and Louise. Based on the true story of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, "Gypsy" never goes out of style due to its resonating core.

The score is legendary, with songs including "Let Me Entertain You", "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn" that have become synonymous with music theatre. The lyrics, written by Stephen Sondheim in his younger years, are filled with irony while the music by Jule Styne represents the brassy, sassy style rarely heard in contemporary theatre.

Dance! Dance! Dance! Classes are continuing at The Media Theatre School and Dance Studio at 28 West State Street in Media.

With the holiday season arriving soon and school now in session, a new schedule for classes begins in November. Classes will be held each week in Tap and Ballet Monday through Wednesday with a special beginner's course in Creative Movement on Saturday mornings at 10am.

This will allow students to pursue dance training while still having plenty of time to focus on their public or private school curriculum and extra activities they might be involved in.

Dorothy Brown, the theatre's dance instructor, says "We are keeping on our toes—in a manner of speaking—in ballet classes.  Students are focusing on placement and proper alignment.  They are finding that their turns, balance, and extension are benefiting."

"We have also been exploring steady beat and rhythm in our Tap Classes and Creative Movement class", she explained.  "Students take turns making interesting rhythms with their feet and hands, while the rest of the class keeps the beat steady. We’ve danced with props in some classes!"

The New Dance Schedule begins in November. There will not be classes on Thursdays and Fridays during the busy school season and holiday season.

Instead, we will focus on the following days and times:

Tap 1...Mondays 4- 5pm and Wednesdays 5- 6pm

Tap 2...Mondays 5- 6pm

Youth Ballet....Monday and Tuesdays 6- 7:30pm; also Wednesdays 6- 7pm

Adult Ballet....Wednesdays 7- 8pm

Creative Movement for ages 4, 5, and 6....Saturdays 10- 11am

Classes are $12 each and must be purchased in groups of 10 by getting a $120 Dance Card at The Media Theatre. Each time students use a card it is marked; all cards are good for a three month period of time from date of purchase. Students may attend whenever convenient throughout the week.

THE BALLET GIRLS 'SHINE' IN BILLY ELLIOT MUSICAL AT MEDIA THEATRE

"Billy Elliot: The Musical", now through January 3 at The Media Theatre, is all about the boy who wants to do ballet rather than boxing during the midst of a miner's strike. The two boys in the production who share the role of Billy are both adept in the craft of ballet. They are Gunar Daniels, 13, of West Chester, and Brandon Ranalli, 13, of Media.

But any great production of "Billy Elliot" also needs a fine troupe of Ballet Girls. Without the girls, Billy's interest and talent for ballet would not be noticed.

The Media Theatre has the region's professional premiere of the 10-time Tony winning "Billy Elliot: The Musical" now through January 3. Elton John's score enhances the story based on the film of the young boy in a Welsh mining town who wants to do ballet rather than boxing. It all takes place during a miner's strike in the '80's, so Billy's enthusiasm to dance is not quite getting through to his family or the town although a dance instructor sees the gift within.

A truly inspirational story for the holidays, "Billy Elliot" features two boys in the title role. After an extensive search, the two boys who were chosen were both from the Philadelphia region. Gunar Daniels of West Chester and Brandon Ranalli of Media, both 13 years old, share the role.

With a New Year arriving soon, and spring not far behind, it’s time to become reacquainted with the performing arts at The Media Theatre while having fun during the learning process. Several new acting and voice classes for tiny tots all the way to adults have been added to the continuing popular acting classes, with a rejuvenated schedule starting up the weekend of January 9.

“Kids Cabaret” will meet on Tuesdays from 4:30-6pm beginning January 12. The Voice Class is specifically designed for children in grades 2-5. The high energy class is all about Singing, Dancing, Acting and Fun! Performers create a cabaret style concert which is performed at the end of the 8-week session in a Grand Finale Recital for family and friends. Performers discover healthy vocal technique, master basic dance steps and learn to bring their personality to the stage while working together as a group rather than maintaining solos.
Therese Walden Murphy, who will instruct and supervise four new classes for The Media Theatre
In the “Teen Cabaret” Voice Class, participants in grades 5-12 create a concert with all students performing a solo within the concert. The 8-week course meets Tuesdays beginning January 12 and culminates in a special Grand Finale Recital for family and friends. “Teen Cabaret” focuses on all aspects of performing a song: interpretation, healthy vocal technique, and breathing skills. Every performer receives individual vocal and acting instruction from instructor Therese Walden Murphy, a professional actress and singer who appeared in the National Tour of “Phantom of The Opera” and several Media Theatre productions. She holds an MFA from the Award winning Old Globe Theatre/U of San Diego program and was the 2nd Assistant Director for the 1997 Broadway Production of Annie.

In the new class “Theatre Magic” pre-school children ages 3-5 experience the joy of imaginative play through theater games, fairy tales, nursery rhymes, movement, music and singing. They’ll be encouraged and challenged to follow directions, learn listening skills, appreciate teamwork, and develop confidence, individuality, and social skills while having fun with new friends. “Theatre Magic” takes place on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30am starting January 13, running for ten weeks.

The Media Theatre adds a new Adult Acting Class with instructor Therese Walden Murphy. The class will now meet on Tuesdays from 7:30-9pm for eight weeks. The class explores improvisation plus basic Meisner and Stanislavsky techniques. The new Adult Acting Class will be a fusion class for actors of all levels, assisting both beginners and those who have made acting a career. This class will be a new approach.

These new classes join the three mainstay courses offered by the theatre: The Level 1 Children’s Class which meets Saturday mornings at 9am starting January 9, Level 2 Children’s Class which meets Tuesday afternoons at 4:30 starting January 12, and the Teen Acting Class which is on Sunday nights at 6pm starting January 10.
Remember: Acting , Voice, or Dance Classes make great gifts!

The Level 1 Children’s Acting Class meets one hour each week and is a ten week course designed for ages 5-8. It focuses on Stage Direction, Working Together, Partnering Exercises, Volume and Diction, and eventually creating scenes. Students enjoy acting and learning exercises such as “Mirror Image”, “Living Picture”, and “Dig Dig Dig!” which explores individuality and self-expression. New acting and learning exercises are added from time to time to keep the class exciting and fresh while maintaining its core-value that “Acting is living as truthfully as one can under an imaginary circumstance.”

The Level 2 Children’s Class for ages 8-11 or those with more stage experience builds upon the core values of Level 1. The course involves much more self-awareness than level one yet keeps its sense of fun. Everyone learns that ‘the character is on the page, but the role is on the stage’ in this class which means that the only actor is ‘you’ and you have the freedom to portray the role according to what the playwright puts on the page with the director or instructor’s guidance.

Being true to yourself is a main ingredient in the Teen Class as well. Students meet for 90 minutes per week for eight weeks with the option of doing scene work with a partner or a monologue. The class is broken up into time sections which also include improvisation, scene creation and study, and dialogue within the class about the work being done. The final week is an Open House in which family and friends are invited to see the work being done by the teens. Roger Ricker, a Media Theatre veteran who has worked with Artistic Director Jesse Cline for over 20 years, instructs the Teen Class as well as the Level 1 and Level 2 Children’s classes.

“Kids Cabaret”, “Teen Cabaret”, “Theatre Magic”, and the four acting classes are $400 for the Winter session. 90 minute classes run for 8 weeks, with the hour long classes meeting for 10 weeks. The “Cabaret” classes and “Theatre Magic” must have at least ten registered students each in order to successfully fulfill their mission.

Along with these new and returning classes, Dance Classes are ongoing at the theatre’s School and Dance Studio. Tap 1 and Tap 2 continue in the New Year, with Ballet being available for both youth and adults. New Dance Classes will be announced soon. Dance Cards are available for $120 (good for 10 classes) and may be used anytime during the week for any dance class.

'BILLY ELLIOT' EXTENDED THRU JAN. 10 AT MEDIA THEATRE

One word used by professional dancers is ‘extension’. Now, “Billy Elliot” may use the term for a different reason as the hit musical at The Media Theatre has been extended through January 10.

With the one week show extension, Philadelphia/ Wilmington region theatre patrons will have more opportunity to see the production hailed as “Terrific” by The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“Billy Elliot: The Musical” is the 10-time Tony winner which has its regional premiere at The Media Theatre. Elton John’s score propels the story of the boy who has a desire to be a dancer rather than a boxer in a Welsh mining town in the 1980’s. It all takes place during a miner’s strike which propels the boy even more to be all he can be and is an inspirational musical focusing on individuality and following your personal passion.

Media’s Brandon Ranalli and West Chester’s Gunar Daniels, both 13, share the role of Billy Elliot.

Both were chosen after an extensive search in Manhattan in which director Geoffrey Goldberg and Media’s Artistic Director Jesse Cline put out the call for young actors who could not only fulfill the show’s requirement of ballet and tap, but also would be able to sing the songs such as “Electricity” and had depth as actors. After the search, it was an ironic twist—and an added bonus-- that both boys lived in the Philadelphia region.

“Billy Elliot” will now play through January 10, with the extension week having evening performances at 7pm Wednesday through Saturday, a Saturday matinee at 2pm, and Sunday matinee at 3pm.
